Hildo Krop (1884-1970) was de zoon van een banketbakker in Steenwijk. Hij koos, na een gedegen koks-en bakkersopleiding, voor het kunstenaarschap. Al snel na zijn opleiding aan de Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten maakte hij naam en werd hem door de gemeente Amsterdam een dienstverband aangeboden.
